This is the story of a fairly confused old man who can't seem to figure out just where (when) he is.

The Last Patron of the Black Dragon

I was stopped at the gas station
When I saw the strange old man
I thought a figment of my imagination.

He was standing in the street
Wearing a black coat and bowler
Looking like something from 1923.

The pump attendant spoke:
See that fella there?
Comes around once a month or so.
Stops right there every time
Looking for his old watering hole.
I guess this used to be a tavern
Long, long time ago
Name, I think, of The Black Dragon.
Been a gas station long as I remember, though.
Keep an eye on him, 'cause he won't stay long.

For a moment the stranger stood there.
Then he scratched his head
And vanished into thin air.

The Black Dragon

Not far from here is a small gas station
Where I have been buying fuel
And where I once witnessed a strange visitation.

I had seen a ghost.
An elderly gentleman in a frock coat
Who was “looking for his old watering hole”.

Apparently the station sits where a pub had been
But it was such a long time ago
No one can seem to remember when.

Anyway, I was driving by there and had to stop.
The gas station was gone!
The Black Dragon stood upon the spot!

I opened the door and stepped inside.
My eyes adjusted slowly to the light.
It was as if I had walked through a wrinkle in time.

A piano played a Roaring Twenties tune.
And dressed in clothing of that period
People danced around the room.

It was a smoky place and loud
Everybody talking and laughing
But then suddenly--no sound.

Everyone in the place was looking at me
And in the flash of an instant
They all disappeared.

I was staring at oil cans stacked on a shelf.
A mechanic came from the garage
Wiping his hands, “Need any help?”

*gasp* where'd he go......???

:-) Steve Doyle replies: "He knows that this is where his favorite place is supposed to be, but it's a gas station now, so he's confused. He'll try again in about a month. Meanwhile, he wanders..."

I hope the poor old ghost isn't trying to drink the gasoline . . . a bit more powerful than alcohol, methinks. ^_~
