I kept a series of copies of the image as it progressed from the partially colored (prismacolor pencils) sketch to the finished image. This is what it looked like when I first scanned it. You can see where I started to add color to the fairy. I had a change of heart on the color, so I decided to change it and finish it in Photoshop. Each element - muchroom, fairy, hair, wings, tree, etc - was produced by being put on it's own layer via a duplicate from the original scan. (Use the trace tool to make a selection then 'layer via duplicate'). This made it possible to reposition things such as the butterfly ;) Then it was all a matter of airbrushing in the rest of the color.

OOH! This is great! I like this. Seldom does one get to see what the artist had to work with, and how it progressed to be the end result. Art is a journey. Thanks for showing the beginning 1

You gotta love Photoshop 1

Oh, How many layers did you have? Just curious.

:-) Roberta Stroud Vaughan replies: "How many layer? I'll have to have a look. The mushroom, the leaves, moss, rock, ground, the tree, ferns, fairy, wings, the fairy's hair, butterfly, stick, the uum..goop on her face and on the stick... 14? The reason I picked up each individual piece of my scan was because I wanted to keep it all so that if I made any mistakes on any details, it wouldn't effect anything else. I knew I'd be cutting it close to the contest deadline.I have all the stages up to partway though the fairy because I was going to do a tutoral on it, but I quit with that thought and concentrated on just finishing it in time... which I didn't quite manage, but turned it in anyway...lol"
