From The Black Cauldron, second book in Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain, and not to be confused with the crappy movie of the same title.

Allowed to join the quest to recover the deadly Black Cauldron from Annuvin, the land of death, Taran is presented with his first official sword, and hastens to ask Eilonwy to gird it on him. The implication being that a young man would ask this honor of his 'best girl', so to speak, she is pleased...at least until he inserts his foot into his mouth by adding that she's the only girl around to do it. The ensuing spat is quite entertaining.

Mmmm I think that the characters tend to wear sandals, and probably not mocassin-things (even with different interpretations of how the characters look, the shoes just seem really out of place to me, like if they were wearing sneakers). Taran, especially, doesn't look very integrated into the scene--he seems to float a bit instead of having his feet firmly planted on the ground. I think it's because he doesn't quite convey a sense of weight. But knowing that the scene is pregnant with an unintended insult and hurled crockery makes it lots of fun! (That's my favorite bit in the whole series: "After all, you're the only girl here..." And he'd been doing so well!)

:-) Dawn D Davidson replies: "They are described indirectly as wearing sandals; however, in medieval times, any shoe with laces was called a "sandal" - it didn't have to be the open-toed mass of straps we think of today, which would be terribly impractical in cold weather, and this book is set in the fall.

Besides, as anyone who frequents Renn Faires can tell you, the shoes we think of nowadays as sandals are just about the most uncomfortable footwear imaginable for traipsing about in the dirt and muck of the outdoors! 2

I agree with you on the Taran weight issue. He does need a bit of work. "

Yes, Eilonwy is very well done here. The posture and angle is perfect.

Lloyd Alexander actually said he liked the movie. He said it was nothing like the book and not as good as the book but that by itself it was a good movie. More reasonable than most authors in my opinion.

14 Dawn D Davidson replies: "Lloyd is clearly a very gracious and humble man. I wonder if there were harp strings snapping while he made this statement. I still think he deserves better."
