Taran, especially, doesn't look very integrated into the scene--he seems to float a bit instead of having his feet firmly planted on the ground. I think it's because he doesn't quite convey a sense of weight. But knowing that the scene is pregnant with an unintended insult and hurled crockery makes it lots of fun! (That's my favorite bit in the whole series: "After all, you're the only girl here..." And he'd been doing so well!) Dawn D Davidson replies: "They are described indirectly as wearing sandals; however, in medieval times, any shoe with laces was called a "sandal" - it didn't have to be the open-toed mass of straps we think of today, which would be terribly impractical in cold weather, and this book is set in the fall.
Besides, as anyone who frequents Renn Faires can tell you, the shoes we think of nowadays as sandals are just about the most uncomfortable footwear imaginable for traipsing about in the dirt and muck of the outdoors!
I agree with you on the Taran weight issue. He does need a bit of work. "

More reasonable than most authors in my opinion. Dawn D Davidson replies: "Lloyd is clearly a very gracious and humble man. I wonder if there were harp strings snapping while he made this statement. I still think he deserves better."
