| 5 Dec 2003 | Benjamin Monroe | I love the cross-genre work you do. In my opinion, there is really no such thing as a genre as per strict rules, because everything eventually crosses. But today, it's important to write cross-genre because genre has become so standard, that in effect, it is eating away at itself and becoming less. Good job. Terin 'Teremir' Teehan replies: "Thank you. I agree: genre does not really matter--the only thing that matters is the story. I mean, you can successfully have a action-romance-science fiction-historical-philosophical tale (sure, the bookstore-owners would have an 'interesting' time figuring out where to place the book, but it can still be done). Besides, I love so many different genres that forcing myself to stay in only one would be like cutting off my writing hand. Not to mention the fact that regulating where a story can go severely limits its potential. Published novelists run into this sort of genre trouble all the time (for example, a science-fiction author who wants to write a Western and can't because their publishers fear that they aren't well-known by the readers of the genre and want them to stick to 'what they're good at doing'). This truly annoys me, and if/when I become a professional author, I will most certainly try to break the mold. " | |
