The colors, too, are extraordinanry! Jeff lee johnson replies: "i did have egyptian stuff in mind when i did this, anne, and am glad you noticed and like the effect as well!"

Why can't I have hair like that? Her eyes look amazing! Red hair is da bomb. I want her hair. So great job (on the hair)!

Jeff lee johnson replies: "great question. this one started out as a sketch called elf princess, also in my gallery. it was done with no references, like the majority of my works, and was one of the very first things i did with a fantasy theme. i wanted to make a true fantasy character, and felt that if i relied on a photo or another person, i might just end up with a human with pointy ears, so i just followed my nose with loose sketches until i saw something i could get even a little excited about. i chewed on that one for some time and decided to make a finished painting from it but with major alterations, owing to flaws i saw and advances i had made it the craft and in concepting. at that time i had a real firm idea about the look and composition, but i was still reacting to the original sketch through the whole process. as to getting your own copy, i am cleaning up all my favorites in order to sell prints, and i am finished with this one and "friends". you can go to http://www.epilogue.net/cgi/database/art/list.pl?gallery=3810 and follow the commands... i have a few packed up at all times. many thanks again for all of your wonderful comments on my work!"

| 21 Oct 2005 | Ragweed | Loading...Hmm, I think I like the original one better. Don't get me wrong, this painting is still mind-blowing, but I think I like it more when the canvas was tighter around the figure. It just made the whole thing feel more intense.
Either way, I'm glad you're satisfied with the painting. It's a beautiful piece of art. Congrats.

| 30 Nov 2006 | Rain | Loading...I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but I just have to say that I love the ear. It's so lifelike, I think partially because it's not very much like a human ear, is it? So many elf ears are either not very detailed or are based so much on humans' that the difference in their anatomy boils down to an extra piece of cartiledge and skin more or less on the top. Also, the hair It's like dreadlocks, which, combined with the ancient-Mediterranean-cultures ornaments, etc. gives it a kind of earthy feel that contrasts with/deviates from the typical Tolkien, airy, high, cold, ethereal idea of elves. (Wow I'm detailed). Love it, SO original and well-executed! | |
