here is my first entry of the new year. trying a different style out, with a limited palette. thought a little more dramatic light might make a dragon especially menacing. happy new year to all!

I think you did a really great job with this one! The limited colours gives the picture a feeling of entirety. It would not have been the same if you gone wild with colours.. Very beautiful (as the rest of your gallery!).

:-) Jeff lee johnson replies: "thanks elin! i thought it might improve the drama to limit the colors. glad you think it worked."

Hehe this kinda reminds me of one of the Terry Pratchet books, Guards Guards when the "Elucidated Brthren" are conjuring up their dragon! Its really good though. The colouring and lighting are immense. The dragon is soo cool! I do have a bit of an obsession with dragons, and as i have found out recently, my obsession lacks one great thing: an ability to draw them... Ah well. Congrats on the picture, i love all the men too!

I like this picture. It seems like a picture I have been holding in my mind, yet I lack the ability to draw it completely. A full moon night, looking over a cliff onto the ocean, and a dragon leaps out of the water! with silver lighting and reflections off of the droplets, I think it would look pretty cool, but I have absolutely no ability to draw something that complicated. *sigh*. I guess I'll just stick to story telling...

I love how you've used orange shades and tones in all of the painting and then contrasted it with the light green at the bottom. That really makes the painting pop. Well done!

i'm afraid i don't find that dragon particularly menancing at all, just darn cute. he looks like he's trying really hard to be scary, especially given his little arms and the way he's scrunching his claws. Like "ARR! I'm feeeaarsome! Rarr!" But, I think that just makes me like this picture more. It really is beautiful, i just love all the orange light, what a great colour. and the magic summoning effects along with all the little faceless sorcerers. (by faceless i don't mean they have no face) they're probably going to get stomped when the dragon walks out of there, and then he'll turn around "OH, are you guys okay?! i am SO sorry!" Anyways, brilliant piece. I love it.
