thar is a character in the vast santharian universe(www.santharia.com). he was the only king to unite the four kingdoms  under one rule. go there. there is lots of art , many well-written stories, and an ever-expanding world tied to an online rpg  you can find there as well.

Masterful piece, I wonder how you made it. And as you replied to Anneke, I agree about light being one of the most important influences on the outcome of a painting.
I usually "overexpose" things I draw.

:-) Jeff lee johnson replies: "joyce, i did a thumbnail rapid color sketch in painter from imagination, making it really bold and overexposed(like an underpainting in natural media), and slowly modified it with semi-transparent layers (10-40% opaque), using spatter airbrush, round oil, and a number of other brushes for different effects and types of blending, until it took shape. the whole process took the better part of a week (spread out over time so i could keep "fresh" eyes on it). Very subtle shading. I enjoy the way that you draw a muted warmth out of the skin and armour. It almost seems like a young version of "Man in a Golden Helmet".

:-) Jeff lee johnson replies: "jordan, i was certainly thinking about the flemish style when i did this. i am still floored by the power of "the man in the golden helmet" to this day. i hit on the link and my breath caught (for the hundredth time?). i have no idea how to improve on that, so maybe someday i will be able to be as effective, and call that the victory of a lifetime, eh?"

Beautiful... It really does remind me of an old style painting, too! I know it has been said before, but you have brilliantly captured the old masters' styles of paintings in this piece. Congrats!!

I,too, am going to say it looks like an old masters style of painting. 2The lighting is what does it, very nice work on the armor BTW.

:-) Jeff lee johnson replies: "yeah, jenny, the lighting is everything in this style, isn't it? thanks for your comment!"

Excellent, wonderful shading and very soft colours. I love the light in this picture. I thought a composition of frontalism can never look real, you proved me wrong. I love that armour a lot.

:-) Jeff lee johnson replies: "the frontal composition gave me fits, fyi. glad you like how it turned out!"

I love how this is old style....I love it so much

Very good. This reminds me of some of the old-style portraits of English kings, only without the effects of age.
15 Jan 2008:-) Hello :)
I think I saw this in one of the Spectrum books, if I’m not mistaken.....Congradulations!

:-) Jeff lee johnson replies: "Thank you! You are indeed right, and Thar sits next to my light elf pic on the same page . That was a champaign moment in our little household."

Dude, it indeed looks like a photograph! It looks so by the little light and subtile use of shade and colour! Great work 2
