And as you replied to Anneke, I agree about light being one of the most important influences on the outcome of a painting. I usually "overexpose" things I draw.  Jeff lee johnson replies: "joyce, i did a thumbnail rapid color sketch in painter from imagination,making it really bold and overexposed(like an underpainting in natural media), and slowly modified it with semi-transparent layers (10-40% opaque), using spatter airbrush, round oil, and a number of other brushes for different effects and types of blending, until it took shape. the whole process took the better part of a week (spread out over time so i could keep "fresh" eyes on it).
