Yes yes, you have a point there. I actually DO some research.  I'm no pro here, mind you, BUT I felt my guns looked just wrong. I had a grasp of ancient and medieval weaponry, but I knew nothing of firearms. So, what did I do? I started digging into the web, and found out a goldmine of info.
So far, I've put together a good archive of photos and datas. This collection helped me in two ways: first, of course, I had actual models to draw after. This helped me "ironing" out the details. Second: I started discriminating between calibers and types. I could draw just the gun that felt "right" for each particular character.
Take this Yakuza sweeper. The carbine he employs is based on actual SWAT guns: the butt and receiving unit are based on M4 and M16 models, the magazine is a 7.62 NATO type, and the barrel is modelled after the German MP5.
This was an earlier pic, so details are still hazy - and I could single out a couple of bloops - but I really liked putting it together from the infos I gathered.
