| 11 Aug 2008 | Anon | Loading...i’ve read your responses to your comments and it seems that you’re very against the feminine, softer version of the mermaid and I admire your interpretation of the siren, but, in terms of folklore at least, the former makes more logical sense you see, the entire myth of the mermaid was probably stems from the situations of sailors isolated at sea with and only with...men. They would eat, sleep, talk, drink, sail, walk, and breath around only men. I’m sure many of the men longed for a sort of "estrogen relief." So, therefore, the desperate longing for the feminine figure after months and months of being engulfed by testosterone was manifested in the form of a mermaid. As for the source of strength sirens bore in order to drive their prey down the salty depths of the ocean, if a mermaid looked intimidating and strong initially, how could she entice the sailors? You could say her magical voice, but her strength could also be magical - seemingly soft and harmless on the outside, but dangerous and powerful on the inside. So the sailors would not really know what they were getting themselves into as they approached her - which is how the myth works.
the painting is amazing - the cove is the best background i’ve seen for a mermaid picture | |
