You ever heard of the "uncanny valley?" Its a concept from robotics that basically refers to human emotional reaction to robots. As the robot becomes more human in appearance people respond to the robot in a more positive way, until a certain point when the positive response drops off dramatically and becomes profoundly negative. This persists until the robot can approximate a human almost perfectly.
