This painting was inspired by the fantastic oil pastel work of Susan Seddon Boulet...I suddenly located the 'oil pastel' function in Painter 7, and went sort've loony. Too much Art Nouveau! Must do something misty! Arrrgh! (Insert spasms here.) In response to a request by fellow artist Kirsten Talmage-Barnes--a few thoughts on technique and media. First off, this was entirely digital, which is unusual for me. I started out by freehanding a rough form sketch for the wolf and the deerhead in Photoshop, on a layer, went back and worked in a little more detail, still with rough one-color lines, then slapped a photo of some peeling paint into the background, and worked it over in Painter while gibbering. (The gibbering is key...)When I had some neat textures going on in the background, I flattened the whole thing, and started painting in fur, eyes, etc, in Painter, over the top of my original form sketch. When I had things fairly well defined--and after I realized that the deer's eyes were sewn shut--I used Photoshop and various methods of layering to add in autumn leaves and lupine foliage, from things I scanned last fall and had laying around the hard drive, then reworked them all in Painter again so that they lost some of that annoying Photoshop tool look. Whew. Quite a mouthful. Anyway, it was fun, and a nice departure for me. (The name's a pun--those are lupines, he's a lupine...okay, I'm easily amused.)

I really like it, but I think he looks slightly bear-ish. I think it's his snout. Either that or I'm more insane than I thought.

I REALLY APPRECIATE IT WHEN ARTISTS GIVE DUE TO THOSE WHO INSPIRE THEM. GOOD ON YOU. THIS LOOKS MORE LIKE REAL ARTWORK

soon to be famous author, do some research or write another damn Twilight saga. Holy ****, holy ****. Ursula, you are an amazing artist and the fact that you doubt yourself only proves you human, and that you twitch, a true artist. Everyone knows there is a fine line between sanity and sheer genius.
