Elke Van_den_Broecke

Elke is living on the frontier between dreams and reality (though she mostly spends her time in dreams)

I'm 22 and I live in a small, mostly unknown European country: Belgium (yes, where the GOOD chocolate and beer comes from). I study history at the university of Ghent, because I have a natural obsession for the past, especially when it has something to do with the old Romans. I share my room with a couple of grizzly bears, ten goblins a few pixies and one very handsome elf. It's a lot of noise, but I can manage it. As you can see from the length of this bio, I'm quite a chatterbox, but as far as I know, it never has killed anyone, so I'll  just keep talking.

I always have been a dreamer, but my love for fantasy is something that I inherited from my father and hs exploded ever since I discoverd the work of Brian Froud some ten years ago. I've been drawing as long as I remember, though I consider myself far from a professional artist. I'm fully aware that my work can use some improvements, but then again I've never had the ambition to be perfect at drawing (or at anything else for that matter). Though that doesn't mean I'm not trying to improve my techniques. Drawing is just something I have to do.

Mostly I use just one simple pencil, so most of my pictures are without colours. And if they are coloured, they look like a disaster. Same theory goes for portraits. If I ever draw something else than a portrait it 's a total mess. I know this, but sometimes I grow tired of faces and I just have to draw something else.

My hobby's and interests include my two cats, whom I care about very much, reading, history, Rome, fantasy my obsession for the colour orange, bears, autumn, being with the people I love and of course drawing. And just in case you were wandering: yes that's me on that picture hugging a sequoia tree. I have more of those strange habits

So, nothing left for me to but to say: enjoy my gallery and please leave a (polite) comment!

29-01-2008: I've finely more or less found out how to work with our new scanner, so there are some new pictures up here. I think there's something seriously wrong with the light strength of the scanner , though. The quality of the new pictures is not as it should be. My apologies for that. I'll try to fix it as soon as I can, but my skills with computer technology are not that highly developed so you'll have to be patient. Meanwhile, if anyone can explain me in plain English (don't use any difficult technical words, because I'll  just not understand them) how I can maken my drawings darker with Photoshop, or do anything else to ameliorate the quality of my pictures, please do, because I'm (almost) desperate!

How I hate technology....
