I am obsessed with dwarves. It started when I was twelve. I walked through the school library on the first day of middle school and as we reached the back where the little conference rooms were, I looked down at the waiste high shelves and a book caught my eye. It was "Nordic Gods and Heroes" by Padraic Colum. I snagged the book and read snatches of it through the orientation video. I had to put it back on the shelf before we left the library and wait a whole week to check it out. I was hooked on the "Teutonic" mythos. The next rung on the ladder was, of course, "The Hobbit" and followed by "The Lord of the Ringsi". I recognized the Germanic Elements in the story and was enthralled with the imaginary world and the powerful themes in the writing. From there it was all downhill. I floated from luch-table to lunch-table and eventually made it to the lunch table where there were some guys, all of whom I recognized as heavy library users, gathered around a strange grid rolling dice and talking about strange things. I made a dwarf and have never looked back. I am now forty and my obsession has only hardened. Yawp! I write and play Irish flute and whistle, some mandola and various forms of percussion instruments. Peace!
