I think sirens would sing to lure ships onto rocks, and keplies, shape changeing water demons who's favorite form was a bulrush - maned horse or a maiden of sorts, and would wait by a lake/pond/river/sea and when someone tried to ride them, they wold dive down to the bottom and eat them...I don't know, it doesn't matter.

Johnson, Mermaids in ancient Greece were sea nymph, birds with woman head, daughters of the sea god Aqueloo (I could be wrong...¬¬')See this pic of Waterhouse(prerafaelist artist): http://www.artrenewal.org/images/artists/w/Waterhouse_John_William/large/Ulysses_and_the_Sirens_CGFA.jpg But I prefer the half woman, half fish like this : http://www.artrenewal.org/images/artists/w/Waterhouse_John_William/large/A_Mermaid.jpg
