Made to support breast cancer awareness. Won honorable mention in a pink quilt contest, and has been featured several times together with my story.

My story

When I was young my mother used to work in a bakery where a beautiful middle-aged woman worked as a decorator there. Since I used to visit the bakery from time to time, I met and talked to her a lot. Back then I told her I wanted to become an artist when I grow. Then she said that she was going to teach me all about art, that she would become my mentor. She was a very lively and beautiful lady. After that I visited lots of times and felt very happy, I couldn't wait to start my art lessons.

Few weeks after she told me that she would be my mentor she got sick. I didn't know what was wrong, I was 8/9 years old. She stayed home for a couple of weeks. When she finally got back, I was sitting at the kitchen table while my mother was working, together with some of my moms co-workers. The decorator lady was back, and I was very happy. But suddenly she fell...

She fell right before our feet, before the table, her wig laying next to her. One of the ladies at the table grabbed me, holding her hand before my eyes, telling me not to look at her, scolding at the decorator lady for scaring me! I was angry at the lady who held me back, so I pulled away. I ran to the decorator lady and looked at her. For a moment there I couldn't say a thing... She had no hair, no eyebrows, nothing...and she looked pale, and so sick...

Then she said: 'Don't be scared little angel, I'm just a bit sick'... When I asked her what she had, they told me that she had breast cancer. When they discovered, she only had a small amount of time left because the cancer was too far developed...

I realized she would no longer be my mentor, and two weeks after that...she was gone. And the worst thing, is that I can't remember her the way she used to be, or look, only that sad face, sickened by chemo, just to live that little bit longer.

After this happened I stopped drawing for a long time. I've always thought that it was unfair for someone that young and talented to die, and became scared myself...

Remember: 1/9 woman, has a very big chance to get breast cancer... and they suffer, and so do the ones around them. That's why I made this work, for all those little girls, who don't understand what's happening to their mother, auntie, grandmother or friend. For all those who've loved and lost. For all those who are still fighting to live...

But must important: for all those who can be saved...

This is such a beautiful and inspirational picture. It makes me so sad, but it shows that there is hope. Well done.

That...Is just so sweet & sad. The picture is wonderful & portrays the hope we all want to reach for. *sniff* I know how that feels, Not to be able to remember how someone was before they got sick. Truly Inspirational & Giving light to hope!

I love the picture, and I almost cried when I read the story.... It’s nice to remember people you have lost, and to honor them in such a great way... tip of the hat to you

That’s very sweet and touching. I’m in support of fighting breast cancer all the way. Pink is my favorite color by the way. Everywhere I go I see pink hair dryers, stand mixers, etc that have the breast cancer ribbon on them, and I say, "I want that!"

I had a breath cancer myself, 7 years ago, but by luck it was very small, and I’m fine now. I’m so sad for you and your mother. You did a beautiful picture, so touching, for her memory. Great work.

Very emotive story, I’ve almost cry, cancer is really hard to get over. The drawing is also awesome. Thanks for this piece of art, because it’s more than simply art. When we are child, we use to see things very different from now... the cool thing of children is that they see humans instead of cancer sick people. That’s the kind of relationship a person needs.

The picture is lovely but whats great about it is the story behind it. It brought a tear to my eye, so sad and moving...
