The elfen Caeci Wolfsong on horseback (or,at least pony-back). Caeci was a character originally created for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons back in the early eighties when I was playing regularly. Her race - the elfen - were designed to be a believable species derived from feline ancestors rather than the primates. Their look was intended to inform the human slang for the race - 'little people' and 'furries (fairies)'. Over the years I developed an extensive back-story for both the elfen and Caeci herself, and she became, and still is, a regular subject for both my illustration and writing.

Here she seems to have almost a Native American look about her clothing. With all my fantasy characters, I like to try to keep the clothing and accoutrements believable in terms of texture and design - I also like to incorporate decoration in the way of quilting or embroidery, just to give a weight of texture to the picture.

Pencil on cartridge paper - approx 140mm x 230mm.

Until someone mentioned Dark Crystal in the comments I never saw a resemblance to Gelflings. Caeci's face seems to have more strength (and attitude) than a Gelfling's. If anything, she reminds me of the Wyrds from Patricia Wrede's Lyra books -- short, furry folk with catlike faces and foxlike ears. I really like this character and this picture in particular. All that lovely detail!

1 Jon Dixon replies: "Thank you Katherine. Yes, Caeci should (if I've drawn her right) have rather more complexity and maturity than the rather child-like Gelflings. I haven't read the Lyra books, and I must look them out - it's great, I'm getting reading suggestions from these pictures to!!"

Beautiful, simply stunning. Suffice to say, every single details and shadings included on this drawing are almost incredible work. Definitely requires the skill of a professional. The horse is so...flawlessly gorgeous. *gulps*
Your art is undebatedly, undoubtedly beautiful. 2

:-) Jon Dixon replies: "Many thanks indeed, TKR. I appreciate the compliment!"

wow jon! this is a really cool picture! the character looks cool by herself but the horse and extra bits juts add to the feel of the peice and character. You've masterful use of graphite pencils to be able to use them to this end, the finish is simply beautiful! :] I love the way you've bothered to put the stitching into her clothes, this is generally a really nice character portrait!! :]

:-) Jon Dixon replies: "Thank you very much, Kat. I'm pleased you liked the picture!"

It does look like a gelfling, even if you invented it first 12 Great minds think alike, and the Dark Crystal was beautiful. Nothing less can be said of your work. Great textures, amazing shading, and a wonderful character. I hope my work looks this polished someday.

:-) Jon Dixon replies: "Thanks, Brandon. I agree that 'The Dark Crystal' is an astonishing piece of work, and Brian Froud is one of my favourite artists. I can only aspire to his technique and imagination! Thanks again."

How is this not mods choice??? Would you like to be on my equine tour??

:-) Jon Dixon replies: "Thank you Sarah. I'd be very flattered to be on your tour if you'd like. Especially as your own horse picture in your gallery is very well done."

I think this is a very nice pic. I love the clothing. The only thing that is bothering me(maybe it's just me), are the nostrils of the horse. They seem to small to me. Other than that, nice work.

3 Jon Dixon replies: "Thanks for the comment, Yvonne!"

YES! someone who can properly draw horses! Geez where have you been?! (and why haven't i discovered you before???) your stuff is fantastic. Yeah , usually peoples' horses are all lopsided and crooked...or fat. GOod job!

:-) Jon Dixon replies: "Thank you. You know there are other great horses in the Wood, though. And unicorns. Never done a unicorn... Hmmm."
