SciFi and Fantasy Art Gandalf in Moria by William J Kenney

This is a pencil sketch(converted to sepia tone in Photoshop)for a larger piece I have planned. Eventually, I'll add the Balrog and possibly Aragorn and Boromir in the background. Maybe I'll do a painted version of it? I know everyone has their own personal view of what the Middle Earth charcters look like, so don't give me those 'Hey, Gandalf's sword didn't look like that!' or 'Actually, his beard was supposed to be two inches shorter!'. We all have a different vision. That is the beauty of literature. Every Middle Earth book contains the same words, but in our minds they are all different. This is my vision of Gandalf and I've decided to share it with you. Enjoy...

11 Jan 2003	Michael Sheridan	Loading... That is FANTASTIC! though I think the sword could have been a bit longer, but no matter. I have rarely seem Gandalf displayed with so much strength and magnificence.

The pencilwork is great, you've shaded him so he seems alive, not flat, which I think is a great accomplishment =) (I'm trying to myself, but I don't think I got it right yet...) One thing: His sword should be longer. I know opinions differ from person to person when it comes to book-characters and how you view them, but the sword doesn't fit the rest of him, methinks. Maybe it's the hilt that does it. A hilt that size requires a longer blade (though I'm not exactly an expert , so I would suggest either reduce the size of the hilt, or make the blade longer. But anyway, this is a great sketch! Keep up the good work! =) and please feel free to visit my gallery...

I think its great that you did this Gandalf the Grey sketch...Also, if you did this before the movie came out then OMG HE LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE GANDALF IN THE MOVIE!!! If not, then he's still excellent!!

It is, as you said, your own, which is always better (with the possible exception of pictures involving Boromir's sleeves) than a vision from someone else's head. And I do wish people would not go on about the sword so. It wasn't what I was expecting but I love it for that.

24 Dec 2006	Tabula Rasa	Loading... Escellent. He's got this charging sort of stance, sort of hunkering down and measuring his target. I don't see that very often, mostly people just draw elves sticking out their swords in 'noble' pose without thinking about what people usually do when using worka sword. However, just one ting, his grip on the sword looks a little odd. I don't know how to describe it, I just think that it would be very difficult for hm to use his sword if he held it that way. Anyway, great work!
