This is a bit of prose that I came up with after I received the final version of a commission portrait for a character of mine. I am not much of a prose writer, so any constructive input would be great! The portrait was wonderfully done by Laura J. Bayless. You can check out her work here on Elfwood. She has entitled Katrina's portrait, Raven of the Battlefield. Laura also gave me some input on this piece before I posted it, and she has a draft version of this piece over the portrait. I want to thank her for her help and for doing such a wonderful job on the portrait.

This has now been updated to incorporate many of the suggestions I have received. Thanks for all your help! (11-10-03)

"Katrina's Resolution"

Yea, those who have fallen before me this day, for you have witnessed the change in the wind. Yea, those who have fallen for me this day, for you have spoken for the Ravens to hear.
Ravens on the battlefield, fly with your message, ride this wind trumpeting the fallen. Follow the current to those who oppose us, and sing it was we who have triumphed this day.
Cry to our enemies both near and far that I held with an army so small and brave. Whisper my name in the midst their sleep so their dreams may bring a torturous night.
Hear all, the battlefield belongs to us, for I carry the wrath of my ancestral blood -  kindred who reveled in fire and ash, and danced upon the fiery mountain.
If evil should rise before us again, know all, I'll unleash my wrath so great. The rage and fury of the mountain itself, shall fill our hearts in glorious battle.
And like the river flowing down the fiery mountain, I shall not waver in my cleansing quest. For, I, Katrina, daughter of Kurnok, am Fireblood.

Good use of ye olde um language! You've got a good range to your stories and yet again you put so much into such stories/poems. I'd like to hear more on Katrina. It's really tempting to hear of someone called 'Katrina of the fireblood'.

:-) William A. Thorn replies: "I am working on a story for her, but I hold this character in such high regard that I am finding it difficuly to come up with something I feel worthy. Most importantly, however, is that I am working on it!"

I know so very little about prose/poetry that I can't think of any advice for this, other than that I liked it. It is so refreshing to visit a portfolio filled with pieces that differ so completely! Good job!

:-) William A. Thorn replies: "Coming from someone so talented, I am happy to hear it!"

Thanks for leaving a comment on my fairy tale. I loved this piece. You can imagine Katrina in a hall of warriors rousing them with her words. Wonderful!

:-) William A. Thorn replies: "Thanks!"

*sigh* Yet another really awesome piece. This is just incredible. I can't write poetry worth a darn, although I've tried from time to time. *considers putting one of her poems back up on her shelf* Well, I'll let you know when I get my next stuff up so you can come leave me some wonderful comments like you did before. Your advice was very well appreciated!

:-) William A. Thorn replies: "Thanks so much for your comments. If there is anything I have learned, it is that something put on a shelf should always be ready to be pulled back off! This piece was very hard for me because I am not a poetry reader nor writer. I really had to get into the emotion that fueled the character's resolve, and to do that I listend to music that invoked in me the emotions that I wanted to invoke in with this piece. As I went along, I read it aloud to see if it did stir such emotion. That would be my only advice for poetry, I suppose, since I simply am not a prose writer. =)"

This is an almost perfect piece of prose-poetry or whatever you want to call it. Reading it aloud was the best thing you could have done-it means there isn't a syllable out of place. The only thing that spoiled the effect slightly for me was the grammatical error in the 'Olde English'.

I learned a lot as a fantasy writer about the uses of 'thou' but it's a bit difficult to explain in the space I have here so what I am going to do is put it up on my webpage (http://glaed.tripod.com) under 'Musings'. Hope it helps! 1

:-) William A. Thorn replies: "Thanks! I am going to check that out."

Wow, this is taking longer than I thought...(5 pages and counting). Expect it Sunday (or Saturday if I really get my socks on...) 1

:-) William A. Thorn replies: "Regardless, I have read it and you have done a good job."

Sweet! I like the ending! This is really quite excellent, you have a gift 2

:-) William A. Thorn replies: "Thank you. Compared to the beginning, the end had little work done on it, and I wasn't quite sure if I liked it."

Woah. How do you do that?!?

:-) William A. Thorn replies: "Read the above replies and couple that with a strong sense of the character I had, and this is what you get."

Zingzing! (Alice has had too much candy...but there's so much left over after Christmas!) Wow! That was *very* spiffy. *nod* No, really! Ignore my valley-girl speech. It comes of too much sugar and too little sleep. *nod* OK. I am going to make a great effort, and like totally ditch that valley gurl side of me!

No, really.

Oh lol wait I gotta say this before I become sensible again. I just saw that the muffin girl commented on your page. LOL! She always makes me laugh...doesn's she make you laugh? She makes me laugh. A lot of people make me laugh. ^_^

I am being sensible now. And, as I have been positively Inspired by the readings of such documents as our country's noble Declaration of Independence and Articles of Confederation and Constituion et. al., I shall be conversing in run on sentences, thus following the example set by our founding fathers so many years ago.

First off, I have read many of the comments left by those who came before me, and I find myself quite confused. I can only deduce that there was an original version and what I have read was a revision. You see, these people are talking about thou's and thy's, which have never been my strong point. And, in reading this piece of work, I find myself, again, quite confused as there are no thou's and thy's. Therefore, I comment.

Second, Kim Cherry said that you could really imagine Katrina in the great hall rousing her warriors to a fight. Personally, while I was reading it I found myself envisioning her in the battlefield, bloodstained and weary, surrounded by disheartened soldiers, and lighting a fire in their hearts with her strong words. Metaphorically, of course.

Third, I very especially like the idea of a girl doing all this! Is very spiffy, yes. *nods empathetically* Yusyus and furthermore, though I think I said this before, I can see her when I read this. Like, really *see* her, you know? I think my valley girl side may be emerging once again.

You have great talent, sirrah. Pray, continue!

:-) William A. Thorn replies: "To begin with, thank you for your praise. Next, this piece is revised. I may have mentioned that in the description but I don't recall off-hand. Next, I did write this while thinking of her looking over a battle aftermath. Click the link I provided above and you'll see a pic of her."
5 Apr 2004:-) Laura J. Korska
This is a really beautiful piece. The imagery was masterful and I loved the ending. Very well done!

:-) William A. Thorn replies: "Thanks for your praise. Maybe someday I'll get the time and the energy to start writing again. There doesn't seem to be enough of either right now."
