The struggle, followed by the peaceful ending once the endorphins kick in make it... basically life in fast forward. 3-4 minutes max before you go unconscious (longer to actually die, but if you don’t get rescued, it sorta doesn’t matter to you.) and in that short time you get to experience the worst and the best, physically and emotionally (and compared to certain horrid injuries or illnesses, a few minutes of pain that’s not the worst there’s ever been followed by peace can’t be the worst way to go.) Also, predation is pretty natural, you know, one life going to feed another. Obviously, in reality the best way to die is painlessly while really old, and hopefully not knowing it’s coming. But my perfect *fantasy* death would be something like this. Maybe fairies are immortal until killed, so when one has simply lived as long as it cares to, it’s seen as natural as old age, rather than it being anything like human-style suicide, to offer one’s life to a creature who wants it more. Of course, knowing your work, it’s highly unlikely that your intent was for her to choose to step into her favorite pitcher plant (not so much because she was in any pain but because she was 30,000 years old and by then you’ve seen it all), find every moment of drowning fascinating, and finally happily fall asleep with her last thought being to genuinely hope the plant enjoys her. But that happening would be awesome. (Yes, I am morbid and weird. Was ever since I was a kid.) | |
