This is a character for a semi-fantastical swashbuckling adventure city-world I constructed, and almost wrote a novel for (ooh, that sounds ambitious! Okay, 3 chapters and a plot outline.), though actually she was pretty much a secondary character.

Andrea is the younger sister of a well-regarded professional duellist in the city of Wintergrin. Always competitive with her brother, she found a swordmaster to instruct her in fencing, and became quite proficient in the art. During a period of war, when most of the city's duellists were conscripted, she appeared to make a name for herself during the absence of the veteran swordsmen, posing as the younger -brother- of her respected sibling.

This ruse worked well to establish herself in the city, but the facade fell apart when not only did her brother return from the war, but late puberty set in, making her deception transparent at best. However, she had already made a name for herself, and against her brother's wishes, was able to stay in the profession.

Update: A few folks have mentioned that they find her head too small.  I decided to do the old 'head count' trick, and she's exactly 7 and 3/4 heads tall, which is considered by most artistic formulas to be proper (7 is supposedly average/realistic, 8 is considered to be 'ideal')>Bearing in mind that this character is supposed to be tall and lanky,  then this head sizes seems just about right.  Maybe the bunchy cloak just makes her shoulders look too big.

Hi, Zack. I like your work.. all of it. I really like the pose in this one.

Cool pic , the pose is nifty keen and the outfit is pretty sweet {tho color couldn't hurt 2 }

my favorite part of this pic is the backstory tho .
Im one o those guys that would always read the lil bio cards for his gi-joes and tranformers before ever actually getting around to play with them

anyhoo as far as the smallish head i think everyone and their brother have already pointed it out ,
my take on it is that her outfit is just padded to make her look more manly 2

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "Thanks John. So then, should I start including backstories like this for more of my drawings? I didn't want to bore folks. 2I know what you mean... I can still quote from those GIJOE and TF bio cards... on some level, any action figure without one will always be 2nd class in my mind. 2Her head... well, she DOES have a small head, I guess, and she's quite tall. Add to that the puffy sleeves and heavy cloak that exaggerate her shoulders, and, uh, her chest, and... well I don't think her head is TOO small for the figure and the style, but I seem to be in the minority... 2"

Nope. I don't buy it. You know how I envy your rather unforced style of drawing. The way you get those smooth flowing lines makes your figures look alive and three dimentional. While I overwork my lines and my figures always look stiff and posed. I'm complimenting you here just so's you don't think I'm totally slamming you. The figure looks great, smooth, relaxed, great costume......but the head is freakishly too small for the body. She looks like Cagliostro, just a tiny head attached to a robotic body. Also, people aren't gonna count the heads, they are just gonna go by their first impression. (Sorry to pick on you, this drawing does kick ass...Maybe when she hit puberty her head shrunk?)

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "Ha ha. My point is yeah, obviously people's initial reaction says it's too small, but when you do the math, it technically isn't. So where does that leave us? Hm. I even played around a bit. I used Photoshop to enlarge her head by 8%, and while that made her look like a perfectly natural 5'5 woman, she became implausible as a lean 6' tall woman. Indeed, her head would then be freakishly large.Overall, I'm thinking the headsize is appropriate to the body-type. However the large cloak, sleeves, and uh, chest do tend to shrink the head by comparison."

Love all the detail! So good to see a realistic character after all that anime proportions.

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "Heh... you may be one the few that think so. 2"

they're wrong, the head is fine!!! It's an awesome picture, and don't listen to the rest of them, cuz it is perfect!

Well its a nice picture, but yeah, the head looks like a witchdoctor got to her and shrunk it.

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "Alas... the debate continues...What's interesting is that I popped by your gallery. Nice stuff also, though I feel your peoples' heads are a bit big, giving the characters a slightly child-like look. I guess we represent two extremes... we should have a kung-fu fight now. 2"

Love everything about this one except you need to switch her feet...looks like her left foot is on the right and vice versa....but mayb thats just me....nonetheless, excellent work1

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "No... it's NOT just you! You're totally right! I can't believe that I never noticed that her feet look... er... reversed. I should tweak that before my next update. 10"

Nice posture! Something odd about her right leg, though (my left)... doesn't seem to be brought back far enough. Myabe the knee is a bit too low, or perhaps a lil more shading on that leg, or making it less detailed than the one in front of it, maybe that'd do the trick-you know, just to make it look like it's catching less light. Anyway, it is a sketch, so I guess I'm being picky. Really gorgeous, though! Very pretty face.. and really nice costume design!
