Here's something a bit different, more Brian Froud-ish, I guess. It's part of a series of larger drawings I did back in art school, on the theme of common, everyday faeries you might not notice unless you're paying attention. This particular critter is found in piles of leaves, but only if you're not fooled by his camofluage.

This was originally done in graphite and brown conte, with some yellow gouache on his eyes, but I jazzed it up in Photoshop. I regret having to crop him to fit on the scanner, because I liked the way his tail resembled the stem of the leaf he's hiding under.

Eew. It does look like someone stepped on him.

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "Hm. Never really noticed that... is it possible you're seeing it as him squashed by someone who left their boot-print in his back, instead of him hiding under a leaf? Hmmm. I think it might be cooler if he actually was squashed. 2"

I like the camofluage aspect {mainly that if you just looked at the pic quickly you'd miss the fact that theres a squised puppy fairy under the leaf 2 } this concept would seem to work really well in a larger picture where most folks would miss the cool hidden details but if you actually spent time looking you would be rewarded with something you didn't expect to see .

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "That's exactly what it's all about! 2 This guy actually came out of my faerie goblin phase, when I was drawing a lot of this stuff. Lantern-eyes in this gallery also. It's funny, when I drew this, I didn't intend for him to be "squished" but now that people have pointed it out, it DOES seem more like he's squished than hiding. Heh."

Hard to tell where imp ends and leaf begins. This would be my favourite mimicryc animal, if I find some in our geographic region hehe 2)

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "That would be a fun National Geographic TV special wouldn't it? 2So the question is, what does he look like in spring/summer/winter... does he hibernate? Does he turn green with the leaves? How does he get by when his camofluage isn't around?"

Yeah, I saw this and the first think I could think was ~Brian Froud~ I love his little hands. Tiny, tiny hands.

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "I think by now, the term "Froudian" should probably be an official part of the fantasy art lexicon. 2Though really, it's kind of hard to give Froud his full props without mentioning Arthur Rackham, from whose cold dead husk, Froud would seem to have sprouted from, fully formed."
