Zachariah Campbell replies: "I suppose it is possible that Tolkien got the term "ent" from some other legend (many of the names in Tolkien are from Norse mythology), but I remember reading somewhere that his main inspiration for them was from Shakespeare's MACBETH. Y'know when Birnham Wood "moves"... well he thought it would be much better if the trees REALLY marched on Macbeth! "

They were created to protect the forests. AS for my opinion on the art is its nice, but i disagree with what seems the popular conciences of what an ent looks like, I have alway thought of them as more of a regular looking tree that moves and has a face. Zachariah Campbell replies: "That's certainly a valid image of the ents... I don't remember if Tolkien ever established that they were humanoid. Thanks for the comments! "

Weeeel... anyone who does a picture of an Ent in their gallery is on my "Yay happy good fun fun fun" list *dons a scary voice* forEVER! Muahaha

| 31 Dec 2003 | Alex | Loading...Hiyas Zach! Ha ha ha just got back from 'Return of the King', and now I get to see an awesome Ent pic! My brain is on a Tolkien overload, I swear. This is really great, I love how you just used the plain black - or brown? - and then the lighter brown on the inside for a bit of detail. Really cool. Now, all you have to do is name this Ent of yours. May I suggest 'Leafy?' Keep up the awesome art! - Alex, who is freezing her butt off here in Canada (the high for today is -28...) Zachariah Campbell replies: "Heh. The actual original colours used on this were various purples, greens and blues... the only colours I happened to have on hand in cheap felt-tipped markers. As the markers "died" I used the weaker marks to do the shading on the inside. Then, in Photoshop, I just filtered everything in sepia, which gave it those nice brown tones... cheating is fun! -28??? Where are you, Alberta? In Montreal, we didn't even hit zero today.. ha! " | |
| 10 Feb 2004 | Franci | Loading...What's your 'patented sepia filter' thingy? Sounds pretty cool. I like this drawing. Even though it was done before the LOTR movies were made, I think it looks a lot like those ents. I love sketchy drawings with the pencil or marker in the same color as the paper. Zachariah Campbell replies: "Well, what I mean by that is just my quick photoshop trick to make stuff look like it's drawn on old brown parchment, which I use a lot as you can see. In 90% of cases, my drawings are actually just boring old pencil on white paper, till I jazz them up. " | |
