| 2 Sep 2002 | Steve Dismukes | Loading..."The nature of Monkey was... irrepressible!" ^_^ This rocks. Good anatomy, good pose - the only thing I'm not totally sure on is the filter - I think more detail would be good, as at the moment it looks kinda blurry and smudgy. But otherwise it's pretty damn cool. Zachariah Campbell replies: "Yeah, the filter was a toss-up... on the one hand, I really liked the sketch in general, but I also liked the "inky" quality the filter gave it. I may post a re-worked version of the original someday soon though, since my use of photoshop has evolved (slightly) beyond just slapping on a filter now. Glad to see I'm channeling the Monkey-Mind with the drawing! " | |
| 9 Sep 2002 | Darren | Loading...Very cool!!! Too bad it looks a little out of focus though. Zachariah Campbell replies: "Arrr! It's the filter! The filter! Blurry, wet edges, like ink! Sigh... " | |
| 11 Sep 2002 | Stanton F. Fink | Loading...Filtering it to give it a wet ink look... Very clever. However, you forgot his headband. Very important, that headband is... Zachariah Campbell replies: "Hm. Actually, the famous band is there, at least in the drawing... I never noticed until now that it's practically invisible with the filter. Thinking of going back to the sketch with this one, and posting a new version soon. " | |
| 13 Sep 2002 | Stanton F. Fink | Loading...Do you watch the "Jackie Chan Adventures"? Since the show deals with a Chinese-influenced supernatural, it was only natural that they had an episode concerning the Monkey King... Your version reminds me of their version, only bulkier. Zachariah Campbell replies: "I've never seen it, though I hear it's well done. Yeah, my version is not quite as wiry as he is often depicted... though his armour adds to his bulk here. I should do another Monkey someday.Have you ever seen the original 2 Chinese Odyssey from 1993 movies? A postmodern take on the Journey to the West, with Stephen Chiau pulling a pretty amazing rendition of Sun Wu-Kung. An excellent 3 hours of viewing!" | |

| 24 Oct 2002 | Dennis Alvarez Domingo | Loading...I actually just watch one of those hallmark movies based on this story. It was the first time I was exposed to it and made me want to read the original fairy tale. Your version looks alot better than the yutz they used for the screen version. Zachariah Campbell replies: "Russel Wong wasn't it? You're referring to the Lost Kingdom, or whatever it was called. I heard it wasn't very good. HongKong movie comedian Stephen Chiau plays the Monkey King about as well as any human being possibly could. Check out the first 2 Chinese Odyssey movies. But not before you read a decent version of the myths, of course. : ) " | |
| 4 Nov 2002 | Anonymous | Loading...That pic is good but i think it could be better so keep trying...... The pic looks like its from the planet of the apes, is it from the planet of the apes? Zachariah Campbell replies: "Ummm..... no." | |
| 27 Dec 2002 | Narina | Loading...this picture looked as if it is done in chinese water-coloured style. Very nice, but the nose part looks a bit doggy... stephen chow versions are really funny, but it's almost totally not in line with the original book. actually the best is still the 1980s tv series. Zachariah Campbell replies: "Hm. Yeah, with the ink filter, his nose does look a bit like a little black dog-nose. Of course, this Monkey looks more animal than human, unlike the Stephen Chow version. It's true, his Monkey movies are only remotely based on the actual myths, but still portray the characters very well." | |
