This guy is a recent-ish D&D char... he's a colorist. Yeah, that's right. He's from a renaissance-style country with a highly active art culture, and he makes new pigments for painters to use in their work.

I got the idea for this guy one day watching some video in class about how oil paint pigments are made, and I was amazed at how weird some of the ingredients were... seriously, like a spell component list. Bat spit, rare pollens, mineral deposits, rhino urine... that kind of thing. So that's his job: travelling the world in search of rare substances to be used in the newest, most vivid paint pigments.

Naturally, his talents also make him a sought-after purveyor of  exotic materials that wizards need for their spells, though often he quite realise what services he's providing in these cases.

My challenge here was to make a classic renaissance swashbuckler that didn't just look like Errol Flynn or Inigo Montoya (or maybe he looks like both... dammit!) Oh, and I also really like this one because he was all done in ballpoint... one of those serendipitous no-erase sketches that just work out.

That is fantastically unfair! He's gorgeous!

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "The funny thing is that after I drew this in class, I looked up and noticed that he had the exact face of the guy sitting across from me. Very strange, like I was subconsciously referencing from my short-term memory... The scruffy facial hair was actually added in an attempt to differentiate him from my classmate."

I still envy anyone who can draw well with a ballpen.

Very good sketch.

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "There's actually a secret to drawing with a ball-point... never start a drawing with the intention of doing anything purposeful. That, and never draw a definitive line when you can draw 8 uncertain ones in the same place... 2"

Haha he looks like me.

I like the fact that this was done in ballpoint, because I do that alot myself, and can respect how unforgiving it is, but the hair looks loke a helmet. In the sense that it all looks like one piece and isn't loose and flowing. I'm a little jealous of this piece because of how well done it is!

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "Yeah, I don't much bother with detail in hair, it's true. Heh, don't be jealous... this is probably the best drawing I've managed to do in recent memory. 2"

This is absolutely brilliant! The detail achieved - using a ballpoint pen, of all things - is masterful. He has such a wonderful expression... one way it is brooding, the other he looks like he is about to steal something... very shifty! Excellent facial features and proportioning. Lovely job!

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "Brooding, yet opportunistic, eh? I like that. Thanks 2"

Another fave...funny that a colorist would be in black-n-white...12

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "Well... I said that HE was a colourist. I'm sure not! 2"

Wow
ballpoint...
Umm..
kool
ballpoint...
again i find myself at a loss for criticism.
It must be cause all your pics are too awesome too have flaws? I dunno.
Very nice pic definately one of my fav.

:-) Zachariah Campbell replies: "uh... too kind. 2Ballpoint can be an oddly liberating medium to sketch in. I like the way it gives a nice solid line, while maintaining a very tactile contact with the paper. But I rarely get results I like this much. "
