Elfwood has unveiled a new, more radical moderation manifesto. I may have to drop EW and move my stuff over to DeviantArt... the updated definition of 'Fantasy & SciFi' content here has seemingly become waaay too subjective and narrow. I anticipate the potential for declined submissions will mean more hassles than it's worth. I've never had any intention of posting anything but "Fantasy and Sci-Fi" drawings at EW. However, as I look around my gallery and consider how many of my pieces could possibly be rejected by an overzealous mod for not being... er, "explicitly fantastical enough", I have to wince at the potential issues. I don't wish to feel like I need to add blatant elf-ears, unicorns, or conspicuous magical 'sparkles' to a picture just to get it published... but I fear that this is the way it's going.
Guess we'll see...
Okay, so I be Zac. I was born waaay back in 1974, and have lived on both coasts of Canada. I'm now living in Montreal, and wondering what to do with 2 BFA's (yes two... in Studio Art and in Cinema. It's very redundant.).
Coming to Elfwood, has motivated me back towards illustrative, fantasy-based art... something that was kind of frowned on back in art school. Whatever.
A lot of the inspiration for the stuff on this site comes from my old RPG days... many of the characters here have some kind of story, whether PC or NPC in origin. Others are just random art and sketches on a fantasy/sci-fi theme.
The potential for community here is cool... I used to be surrounded by a lot of 'art-friends', so I really miss that. I dig getting comments on the work, on the style OR content... so leave comments, OK? :)
Some genre-art things I love lately:
Hiroaki Samura's manga BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL
Mark Smylie's medieval epic ARTESIA
Korean manga CHONCHU (currently just available in french I think)
Giant robot anime GAOGAIGAR
fantasy artist Justin Sweet's digital paintings in general
Oh, and a note on commissions... I do commissions. Very. Slowly. I mean, I might knock something off right away, or it could take forever. This I have learned through the misfortune of others. :)
Oh, and check out my Fanquarter gallery... lots of custom Transformers there! :)

Zachariah Campbell replies: "I think the Oni drawing was probably done with a basic 0.9 HB mechanical pencil... nothing exotic. The line looks a bit heavier because it's actually a very small drawing (like an inch tall). Plus, I punched up the contrast a bit in photoshop and added the sepia tone, of course.Glad you like my drawings! " | |

She never gives me any nice comments on my fantasy stuff but hey, I bet I make more than her selling my art. It's just nice to know that others are frustrated at the school art world for their narrow mindedness on a subject that is meant to be open to personal expression and interpretation. I love it all by the way! Especially the little leaf guy, I love surrealism Cheers! Zachariah Campbell replies: "Thanks! I mean, not to totally disparage my time at art school... I learned a lot of great stuff there, and I'm far less bitter about the experience than other folks I know. I love all art, even the pretentious stuff. But it is a shame that there's such a stigma attached to illustrative work now, especially fantasy work.Considering how popular fantasy is right now though, I guess we should feel embarassed all the way to the bank, eh?
